Gault Millau 2014

"The 2012 vintage appears to be one of those wines that Christian Ebert from Schloss Saarstein castle has a particular talent for. These Rieslings offer a very classical take on the Saar-style wines. As so often before, even the basic wines produced by this estate winery are of an above-average quality. It starts with the semi-dry Riesling, a wine sold in a litre bottle that always belongs to the best of its kind. That Ebert also has the touch when it comes to Burgundy-style wines, is shown by his Pinot Blanc that has, once again, turned out to be juicy, clear, and a great joy to drink. Even the dry Riesling, which is available in litre bottles, is a light-bodied wine that goes down well.

The best dry wine of this vintage however is made from old vines and is one the best that have been produced along the Saar River in 2012. Ebert has been particularly successful with his sweet and fruity wines such as the high-quality Kabinett and Spätlese (late-vintage) wines that we found exceptionally appealing."
